Music, like everything in the modern age has taken a twist with the times. Technology continues to allow new ways to grow, target, and profit by offering different avenues than the classic set path. For example, a musician, or really any sort of entertainer for that matter, no longer needs the notoriety of a label behind them to “make it big”. The first instance of this was the comedian Dane Cook. Whether you like him or not does not matter, what matters is that he figured out how to use social media in such a way to get his name out there that he became famous virtually overnight. Who needs a venue when you have a 100,000 twitter followers. There’s a cat on YouTube who has nearly 2 million subscribers to his channel. He is a gifted artist and he continues to pump out covers of the top songs in well produced videos. This has gotten him paid, and gotten him recognition.
Social Media allows us today to display our talent and there are so many consumers on social media today that there is a market for almost anything you can think of. Who thought funny cat videos would be what they are today? Anyway I digress, back to music, I really appreciate a good cover, when I fall in love with a song one of my favorite things to do is get on youtube for a couple hours and listen to different covers done of that song, because I appreciate the different variations and creativity that get brought to it. And truth be told, there are some darn talented artists out there. You don’t have to travel far on your laptop to find someone truthfully more skilled than the people that are getting paid big bucks currently. There’s a lot of talent out there. All I am saying with this, is don’t underestimate the power 0f a good cover. It could get you paid….
